Crafted by Adrián Martínez Alarzón of Taller Bichuga Bigu, this jarrito and mug set seamlessly blends ancient reduction firing techniques with contemporary sculptural forms. As a seventh-generation artisan from Santa María de Atzompa, Adrián draws his greatest inspiration from nature. The set features a uniquely handled jarrito and two mugs, each adorned with the intricate, carbonized patterns of horse hair Raku and mineral pigments extracted directly from the earth. By combining the ancestral pottery traditions of his lineage with a sophisticated modern aesthetic, Adrián creates functional art that honors the history of Oaxacan clay.

About the artist

Adrián Martínez Alarzón

Adrián Martínez Alarzón is a visionary seventh-generation ceramicist from Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, and the founder of Taller Bichuga Bigu. He is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional Oaxacan pottery by integrating innovative techniques, such as Horse Hair Raku (burning hair onto hot clay to create root-like textures) and the use of natural mineral dyes. His sculptures often explore themes of nature and Zapotec cosmovision, featuring symbolic figures like pollinator bats, sacred Pochote trees, and legendary chaneques (forest guardians).

All the little things you might wonder

  • Every piece in this collection was purchased at the artist's full asking price.

We believe in honoring the mastery, heart, and immense time that goes into these living traditions. By paying fairly and directly, we aim to support the livelihoods of the families we work with and help preserve these incredible histories for generations to come.

  • Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.

  • Yes, everything is hand-made and one-of-a-kind! Due to the handmade nature of our products, slight variations in color, texture, and dimensions are natural and are part of the character and authenticity of each piece.
