Armadillo
This striking sculpture by Adrián Martínez Alarzón, founder of Taller Bichuga Bigu, is a profound exploration of the armadillo, a creature revered in the Zapotec worldview as a protector of cornfields and a symbol of fertility and renewal. In indigenous tradition, the armadillo’s shell represents the fertility of the earth and the furrows of planted fields, reflecting an intimate connection to the land and the lifeblood of the community.
Drawing from his deepest inspiration, the natural world, Adrián expertly crafts each piece using the Raku firing method, featuring natural pigments and unique carbonized lines created by applying his own hair during the firing process. A seventh-generation artisan from Santa María de Atzompa, Adrián masterfully bridges ancestral Zapotec symbolism with a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic through the specialized techniques of his workshop.
