Doda Razafy is a Malagasy artist based in Antananarivo, Madagascar, known for his outlined watercolors, a technique where ink contours give structure to vibrant, bustling scenes of daily life. He's often called the "Malagasy Dubout," a nod to French cartoonist Albert Dubout, since both share a love of crowded, humorous, highly detailed scenes. Born William André Razafindrainibe in 1954, Doda came from a family where art ran deep, but he spent much of his life working various jobs to support his eight children before picking up a pen and watercolors less than 20 years ago. That late start shows in the work: decades of raising a family and getting by in Madagascar give his scenes of market vendors, packed bush taxis, and neighborhood life a kind of lived-in honesty that's hard to fake.
