This one-of-a-kind clay masterpiece, crafted by the son of the legendary José García Antonio, serves as a profound visual narrative of the García family legacy. In this intricate piece, the artist, also named José, honors his parents at the heart of the composition, flanked by his two sisters depicted as sirenas. These mermaids are a poignant tribute to his father’s most iconic motif.

Beyond the family, the sculpture captures the soul of their home, San Antonino Castillo Velasco. The village church and the family’s own doorway rise from the clay, nestled among the vibrant blooms and stalks of corn that define the Oaxacan landscape. It is more than a sculpture; it is a living history of the García lineage, rendered in the earth of their ancestors.

About the artist

José Miguel García

José Miguel García Mendoza is the son of master artisan José García Antonio. He began his craft as a child, mimicking his father's work by creating small mermaids while his father sculpted large-scale versions. Today, he is an award-winning artist in his own right, having earned first prize in the Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art (FOFA) young artists' competition in 2016, as well as multiple honors in 2008 and 2011.

His work continues the family tradition of using local red clay and wood-firing techniques, but he has developed a unique style that blends traditional Zapotec culture with historical and modern themes. His sculptures often feature intricate details such as fossils to represent Oaxaca’s history, alongside figures that combine indigenous traditional dress with contemporary elements.

All the little things you might wonder

  • Every piece in this collection was purchased at the artist's full asking price.

We believe in honoring the mastery, heart, and immense time that goes into these living traditions. By paying fairly and directly, we aim to support the livelihoods of the families we work with and help preserve these incredible histories for generations to come.

  • Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.

  • Yes, everything is hand-made and one-of-a-kind! Due to the handmade nature of our products, slight variations in color, texture, and dimensions are natural and are part of the character and authenticity of each piece.
