Armadillo Red Clay Tea Set
Hand-burnished by Elia Mateo, this stunning tea set is a masterwork of barro rojo from the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. Traditionally, the armadillo is revered by the Zapotec people as a "guardian of the seeds," a protector of the soil and the life-giving corn crop. As a member of the Mujeres del Barro Rojo collective in San Marcos Tlapazola, Elia preserves ancestral techniques by hand-modeling local clay and achieving a radiant, silky sheen through meticulous burnishing with quartz stones. This characterful set includes an armadillo teapot, four cups, and a matching tray, celebrating both indigenous folklore and the economic independence of women artists.

Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.
