Reyna Esther García brings the spirit of the Oaxacan coast and her deep love of the sea into her work with barro rojo (red clay). In this hand-modeled piece, she captures a serene mermaid blowing into a conch shell, topped with a functional candle holder. As Reyna describes her inspiration, "I make mermaids to tell common stories with a marine soul; art unites the real with the imaginary".

About the artist

Reyna Esther García Mendoza

Reyna Esther García Mendoza, a red clay artisan born in the town of San Antonino Castillo Velazco, is the eldest daughter of master artisans José García and Teresita Mendoza. From a very young age, she was connected to clay, as her father is one of the great masters of Mexican folk art and his inspiration for her to create mermaids, women in traditional dress, animals, and other representations in clay.

Her connection to clay deepened when her father lost his sight and she had to help him add the small details to the mermaids. At the age of 15, working with clay became her job, no longer just a game. Today, she and her children continue creating clay pieces related to mermaids because she likes to connect the everyday with the sea, because mermaids also inhabit daily life.

"I make mermaids to tell common stories with a marine soul; art unites the real with the imaginary," says Reyna Esther García Mendoza.

All the little things you might wonder

  • Every piece in this collection was purchased at the artist's full asking price.

We believe in honoring the mastery, heart, and immense time that goes into these living traditions. By paying fairly and directly, we aim to support the livelihoods of the families we work with and help preserve these incredible histories for generations to come.

  • Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.
