This intricate work by master ceramicist Angélica Vásquez Cruz is a breathtaking tribute to the Chinas Oaxaqueñas, the iconic women who lead Oaxaca’s traditional processions. Meticulously handcrafted in the clay of Santa María Atzompa, the figure features a towering canasta de flores (flower basket) and a multi-figured musical band, all modeled with the delicate, signature "pastillaje" technique.

In this specific narrative sculpture, the central figure is surrounded by a banda de músicos, capturing the lively sounds and communal energy of a Oaxacan calenda (parade). Through her unparalleled attention to detail and use of regional craft techniques, Vásquez Cruz honors the strength of these legendary "hostesses" and the festive, spiritual traditions of the Central Valleys.

Note: Due to the extremely delicate nature of the miniature pastillaje work, this piece is available for delivery or pick-up only.

About the artist

Angélica Vásquez Cruz

Angélica Vásquez Cruz is a master ceramicist from Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, renowned for transforming traditional pottery into intricate sculptures that explore Zapotec mythology and female identity. She is famously known for her technical mastery of "engobes," using natural mineral slips to achieve a rich palette of earth tones without the need for glazes or paints. Her work is exceptionally detailed, often featuring layered narrative scenes that can take weeks and months to complete, earning her the prestigious National Prize for Arts and Sciences. Despite early struggles for recognition in a male-dominated craft, she is now celebrated globally as a pioneer who elevated Oaxacan clay work to the status of fine art.

All the little things you might wonder

  • Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.
