This carving by Mozambican artist Sam Baloi highlights the evolving nature of the Psikelekedana tradition. While many works focus on village life, Baloi often incorporates modern subjects, reflecting the intersection of traditional craft and regional tourism. Sculpted from cashew wood, the piece captures a humorous encounter between tourists and a cheetah. It serves as a contemporary record of the adventurous imagery that defines the African landscape, blending ancestral techniques with a playful spirit.

About the artist

Sam Baloi

Sam Balói is a self-taught Mozambican sculptor who has revitalized the Psikhelekedana tradition by transforming humble softwood into vibrant, narrative-driven dioramas. Though his early passion was nearly stifled by a childhood injury and the hardships of the Mozambican Civil War, Balói persevered, eventually finding a global audience for his intricately carved and brightly painted scenes of rural life. His work, notably his detailed "Lobolo" (bride price) and nativity tableaux, is celebrated for its ability to preserve Southern African cultural history while documenting the evolving social landscapes of the Ronga people.

All the little things you might wonder

  • Every piece in this collection was purchased at the artist's full asking price.

We believe in honoring the mastery, heart, and immense time that goes into these living traditions. By paying fairly and directly, we aim to support the livelihoods of the families we work with and help preserve these incredible histories for generations to come.

  • Every item is hand-selected during my travels, looking for pieces that feel "raw" and authentic rather than mass-produced. I focus on finding works that tell a story of a specific place and people, often visiting remote regions to find traditional art that isn't found in typical markets. I look for the beauty in the "imperfections" that only human hands can create.
